how fit should i be for barrel racing? and other questions.?
ok, so i want to break into barrel racing and want to be more fit in my saddle, what can i do to make it better? i am around 170-180 lbs, but i am a tall teen so it evens out. should i loose weight to make my horse move faster? what exersizes can i do to be more fit in my saddle? also how can i practice the sharp turns more? should i lean more forward to give my horse more rein? also where can i find western apperal in minnesota or more prefibly rochester minnestoa? thanks! ;D
but i also want to know, what are some exersizes that will help me loose the weight for barrel racing?
Oye. For starters, you want to lose weight so your pants are “loose.” L-o-s-e. Second, losing weight will not make your horse run that much faster (if at all). Third, you never, ever lean forward when turning a barrel. You sit back in the seat and lift to allow your horse to turn. Regardless, to lose weight try working at the barn as much as possible: clean stalls, carry water buckets, etc. Run on a track. Drink water. Stop drinking soda/eating candy/eating junk food. I’m 5′9″ and I weigh 110lbs and that’s basically what I do. About perfecting your turns: horses that have the ability to move their hips have tight turns. You need to teach your horse to lift his body with the use of his back end. Crappy barrel horses turn entirely of their front end which causes them to drop their shoulders and creat wide turns. A skilled barrel horse lifts his shoulder and turns from his back end. To explain all of this to you would take forever, so I would suggest that you buy a dressage book (yes, dressage) or a reining book to learn about the importance of working a horse’s hip. Or you can e-mail me. Good luck.
